Why Busy People Prefer Same Day Dentistry (CEREC)
People who often find themselves too busy to visit the dentist can now take advantage of same-day dentistry (CEREC). That includes a large segment of people given the fact many find themselves dealing with busy school, work, and family schedules.
Gone are the days when most dental procedures required multiple visits to the dentist. For example, the traditional way to get a crown installed requires numerous visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will take an impression of the patient's mouth, and then those measurements are sent to a lab where the dental device is manufactured. That usually takes somewhere between two to three weeks. The patient is generally stuck with a temporary prosthetic during that period. When the prosthetic is finally ready, the patient will then have to schedule another appointment for its installation.
That is a major inconvenience for anyone with a busy schedule. He or she would have to take time off for the first appointment, then take more time off for the final installation. When someone considers the time spent driving to the clinic and the waiting times, about 5-10 hours could have easily been wasted when it is all added up.
Thanks to same day dentistry (CEREC) people with busy schedules no longer have to deal with all that hassle. Many dental prosthetics like crown, veneers, and bridges can now be manufactured and installed right at the dentist's clinic. That means patients only have to take a day off to get whatever dental issues they are dealing with taken care of and completed.
History of same day dentistry (CEREC)
The CEREC system was developed in Switzerland at the Zurich University. This machine has been deployed all over the world since 1985, and the results have been spectacular. There have been over 8 million people treated using CEREC since its inception.
CEREC can be used for more than just manufacturing dental prosthetics. It can also be used to create tooth-colored fillings that are the same shade as the patient's natural teeth. That aspect helps in making fillers and composite bonds look more natural.
What to expect during a CEREC procedure
The CEREC system uses a 3D camera to scan the patient's teeth for the measurements. This technology removes the need for silicone impressions that can be unpleasant for some and even lead to vomiting. Thanks to CEREC, the need for a temporary prosthetic has also been eliminated.
Prosthetics made with CEREC are manufactured from a ceramic block that is put into the device in a matter of minutes. The assembled devices are ready for installation once they have been created. That is what allows the dentist to perform treatments that used to require multiple visits in a single day.
During the procedure, the dentist will start by educating the patient about the benefits of CEREC. The oral professional will then remove any defective restorations, fillings or tissue before creating a 3D image of the patient's mouth using the CEREC camera. The dentist will design the repair using a monitor connected to the CEREC unit. Once the design process is complete, the prosthetic will be created by the machine immediately.
